Introducing WOC Career Conversations Launching July 12th
Let’s Talk About Careers for WOC
Career Conversations is our response to the realization that people want to launch products but the barrier to entry for product-based businesses is higher than the service oriented agency model that black and brown communities usually explore as a transition to entrepreneurship.
As you know WOC is growing and changing. We love connecting women through engaging dialogue and intimate events, like Career Conversation, to discuss all things beauty, fashion, retail and commerce as it relates to Women of Color. This monthly series kicks off on Friday, July 12th, at noon, with Rucker Roots discussing their career transition as sisters from Chiropractor and Educator to haircare founders and beauty moguls, while juggling motherhood and every other facet of life!
About This Virtual Series
The US Census Bureau revealed a record-breaking 5,481,437 new businesses were started in 2023. And according to Wells Fargo, the number of women-owned businesses increased at nearly double the rate of their male counterparts, while Black women and Latina entrepreneurs emerged from the pandemic stronger than all women-owned employers.
The number of women-owned businesses between 2019 and 2023 increased at nearly double the rate of those owned by men; and from 2022 to 2023, the rate of growth increased to 4.5 times. More than a decade ago, women-owned businesses were concentrated in just three industries. Now, half of all women-owned businesses (50%) are concentrated in these four industries:
Other services (hair and nail salons, pet care, laundries, and dry cleaners)
Professional, scientific, and technical services (legal, bookkeeping, and consulting)
Admin, waste management, and remediation services (office admin, staffing, security)
Healthcare and social assistance (child care and homecare, mental health, physicians)
Our goal is to support women in building product-focused businesses where they can move away from trading time for money and experience the time and financial freedom that comes with creating a scalable productized business.
What To Expect
In each conversations, we’ll discuss different career backgrounds, products founders create and market, or how they navigate work, life, family and everything in between. Some conversations will focus on entrepreneurship, other conversations will highlight opportunities to grow your corporate career or find your footing with brand partnerships. While this advice is common, the real challenges lie in the “how”. We really want to delve into actionable and practical steps that you took to land where you are today, so we promise each conversation will offer practical and tactile steps toward reaching your goals as a brand founder or retail professional.
Conversations will start with 40 minutes of curated dialogued followed by a 15 minute Q&A. Be sure to register using the links provided on our events page!
